Take time to plan reconstruction of library services after tsunami
disaster says CILIP
Library and information community's response must be ready when
needed
CILIP: the Chartered Institute of Library and Information
Professionals is monitoring the situation in the aftermath of the
tsunami earthquake disaster, and a strategy and action plan for
CILIP's involvement will be discussed by the Institute's Executive
Board on 20 January and by its governing Council on 9 February.
"Given the immensity of the disaster and the urgency of the need
to supply food, water, sanitation, shelter and medical assistance,
as well as the need to deal promptly but sensitively with physical
debris and human remains, it is likely to be some time before
attention turns to library services in the process of reconstruction
and renewal," says CILIP's Chief Executive Bob McKee. "However,
that time can be used to plan an effective and co-ordinated
response in partnership with professional colleagues in the affected
areas."
International response to the disaster from the library and
information community is likely to be co-ordinated through the
International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) in
conjunction with UNESCO. In addition, there may be responses
from individuals - and individual national associations like CILIP -
which build on pre-existing personal and institutional links. CILIP,
for example, has strong links with the profession in Sri Lanka and
in India.
"The tsunami disaster has focused the world's attention and
mobilised international support on an unprecedented scale," Dr
McKee continues. "The destruction will clearly have had an impact
on library services in the affected areas, and we must be ready
when needed."
