Collette,
I have followed the discussion you have had, mainly with John, and I
have similar concerns. We have just had two MMU students in and access
worked as you described but I then had to go and get rid of the
cookie. I can see some of our less than competent NHS users being very
confused when they try to log into ADITUS and get MMU. I am in
discussion with our computer services department and we may initially go
down the same route as John and bar MMU from most Trust PCs except for a
selected few in the library, until some other solution can be worked
out.

hi, Please see the suggestions on the sheet (attached) for putting on
and taking off the MMU cookie. Accepting the cookie is not permanent;it
can be removed to allow access to Aditus and only accepted if a student
wants to use MMU Athens resources. Please let me know if there's a
problem doing this on your Trust PCs,
Thanks,
Colette

Hi All.
Investigation here has shown that accepting the MMU cookie interferes
significantly with our NHS users' ability to gain access to our NHS
Athens authenticated resources. We are not happy with the threat that
this poses to our non MMU users, and are looking at ways to get round
this - at its worst this might mean blocking access to the MMU webpage,
though we hope there might be some softer way of doing this. All
contributions to this debate welcomed, especially from the more IT
literate of you out there.

Hi, John,
this is what I'm concerned about - how many Trusts do not actually allow
cookies to be set? I can see most academic institutions doing this
eventually, because it means students don't have to remember different
user names and passwords. I think, around here, Liverpool John Moores
and Bolton use this devolved authentication approach to Athens as well
and almost all other universities use it or are considering it, from
what i can find on the Athens website.
You can only use My Athens if there's a cookie set.
I think publicity is the only way round this and we need to make sure
our NHS students know what's going on.
thought I'd start with NHS librarians, though I take your point about
staff not in the library.
any further comments welcome

Hi Colette,
I foresee some problems here. Those Trusts that encourage PC users not
to allow cookies won't be keen to change their policy just to
accommodate MMU students. Equally, how many non-MMU library users will
be put off using electronic reources by encountering PCs set to default
to MMU resources, not just in the library, but perhaps on open-access
PCs on the wards where library staff will not be on hand to help resolve
the problem? Is it no longer possible for MMU students to log in in the
time-honoured manner via My Athens?
Cheers,

Subject: MMU Athens passwords
Hi,
MMU Students now use their MMU network user names and passwords to
login to Athens resources. They have to set a cookie on their computers
for this to work. This may cause problems for people accessing NHS
Aditus resources, or other sets of Athens authenticated resources.
Please see the attached sheet for help with this.
Please let me know if your computers don't accept cookies and you or
your library users can't change security settings.
I hope the various placements of MMU students now under way are going
well. Please don't hesitate to e-mail me if there is anything you need
to know, or want to discuss.
