Dear All,
I'm forwarding Linda's email which raises an issue that I know has been touched on in other lists in the past - the thorny problem of how to locate library users who've left employment with unreturned items on loan. As Linda says, there could be data protection issues here. Equally, it's galling to see your books walk without doing everything you can to get them back. I'm unclear exactly which aspects of Data Protection we are breaching: whether it's (1) the implied nefariousness of the user which may be libellous (in which case a simple plea for location without stating the reason why might avoid the problem), or (2) whether simply seeking or divulging the location of a person without their knowledge or consent might be the problem. If it's (1) then this might be easily circumvented. I suspect it's (2) though - can a member of the Information Governance group shed definitive light on this? - in which case I'm open to suggestions.

Hi John
I noticed Debbie's message about the errant doctor on the LIHNN list. I'm a little concerned because I don't think that people who use the list realise that this is a public list on jiscmail and that anyone can search and view the archives. This implies it's a data protection issue. (Then again I might be being paranoid!)
Do you think, in your capacity as Chair of LIHNN, that this is something that the LIHNN members should be alerted to? Feel free to ignore me.
Linda
