Dear all,
I encourage geophysicists with appropriate experience to
complete Tony Austin's questionnaiare about large datasets
gathered in archaeological and geophysical surveys.

Hi,
We are seeking a wider input to a questionnaire; specifically from the
Earth Sciences and wonder if you think the message below is suitable for
your list.

Preservation and Management Strategies for Exceptionally Large Data
Formats: 'Big Data'
http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/project/bigdata/
Archaeologists are increasingly creating and working with large
datasets. The generic growth of computing capacity is allowing
technologies more usually associated with other disciplines such as the
Earth Sciences to be used for archaeological research. Examples include
the laser scanning of monuments and objects, Light Detection And Ranging
(LiDAR) landscape surveys and many underwater techniques used in
maritime and oceanographic studies.
English Heritage have commissioned the Archaeology Data Service (ADS) to
determine best practice for the creation, long term curation and
dissemination of datasets generated by projects using such technologies.
The methodology adopted is to concentrate on three case studies
Wessex Archaeology: have been successful in receiving ALSF funds via EH
for the Wrecks on the Seabed Project round 1, the project will contain
data relating to the investigation of submerged archaeological sites
using geophysical tools and diver based techniques.
Durham University: AHRB funded project called Breaking through rock art
recording: three-dimensional laser scanning of megalithic rock art.
University of Birmingham: Where Rivers Meet' project (ALSF 3349). Using
LiDAR data held by the Environment Agency who will need to be consulted
on archiving issues.
We are also seeking a wider input and urge anyone involved in the
creation or use of 'big data' to complete a short online questionnaire
on the Big Data web site at
http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/project/bigdata/question.cfm
Your help will be really appreciated
Thanks
Tony
