Very sorry to hear this Scott. Thanks very much for letting us all know. Although I unfortunately never had the opportunity to meet Charlie, his body of work and obviously careful, thorough approach always served as great examples for us all.
RIP Charlie.

>Many of you may know of Charlie through his very detailed mineralogical and petrological work in western Maine, USA, and for championing the concept of “petrological mineralogy”. But what many people don’t know is that Charlie was the quintessential, old-school field geologist. When I moved to Maine around 5 years ago, Charlie began taking me around the State to show me the rocks. What an amazing place, and what an amazing guy! It was some time before I realized that Charlie had mapped some of the 15 minute quads that make up the Geologic Map of Maine. He was a superb field geologist in every sense – he even taught me how to make chewing gum from the sap of spruce trees (really, it doesn’t taste very good so I always wondered if this was one of his jokes...).

The work that he achieved in his life has set the foundations for a wealth of new, process-oriented research in Maine and elsewhere. So it should be!
