Dear Tracy
Thank God someone is doing this!
I am outraged at the present Art curricula for GCSE, AS level and A
levels, that insist that students use sketchbooks as a means of
post-rationalising their work, rather than as a free and safe place to
explore and experiment and gather ideas without being precious and
pressurised into trite presentation culture. This current education
practice completely undermines some of the most import works in Western
art (the sketchbooks of Leonardo, Constable, Turner) and pattern books
of the Guilds and De Honnecourt.
But be careful, for I fear that you are entering some pretty dangerous
territory here with regard to the examining hegemony.
Sorry you touched a sensitive point there - I'd be pleased to
contribute to any debate on this issue.
