INTERNATIONAL DESIGN RESEARCH CONGRESS

1-4 November 2005: International Design Congress - The
Conference of the International Association of Societies of
Design Research IASDR 2005. National Yunlin University of
Science and Technology, Taiwan 1-4 November

Please be informed that the deadline for the submission of
abstracts has BEEN EXTENDED to February 15, 2005. The 2005IDC
Committee has received a number of requests from those who are
facing their busiest time of the semes ter to postpone the
deadline. We hope that this extension will give all the congress
attendees enough time to prepare a good abstract for the
congress.

Theme
New Design Paradigms

Aims
The conference aims to provide all the participants an occasion
to share and exchange experiences and research findings, to
stimulate more ideas and insightful suggestions, and then to
promote the academic level of design study and design education.

Background
The development of digital technology and the information spread
has already had a tremendous impact on human life and thinking.
It also has had an influence on design and has let people
experience the importance and trend of combining digital
technology with design. Digital technology has come into the
main stream through both theory and practice of design. With the
coming of the Knowledge Economy Age, digital creative design is
an efficient instrument for the development of many industries.
A crucial issue in the design field is how to embed creativity
and culture into industries via digital technology and design in
order to improve the living environment. The tendency toward
change in the field of design might lead to a conversion of
design paradigm. Therefore, 'New Design Paradigms' is proposed
to be the theme of International Design Congress - IASDR 2005.

DESIGN STUDIES AWARD

We are pleased to announce the winner of the annual Design
Studies Award, 2004, for the best paper published in the
journal. The award is to be made to Marian Petre of the
Department of Computing, The Open University, UK, for her paper
How expert engineering teams use disciplines of innovation, Vol.
25, No. 5, pp 477-493.

Abstract

Innovation happens deliberately more often than it does by
inspiration. This paper describes disciplines applied by
effective multi-disciplinary engineering firms in nurturing
innovation in order to produce intellectual property in a
variety of domains, from telecommunications to medical
instruments. The report arises from a series of in situ
observations and interviews in 12 engineering consultancies in
the UK and US over 2 years. It describes strategies that expert
designers use to 'get out of the box' of familiar thinking, to
identify gaps in existing products, and to go beyond
'satisficing'. It describes the supportive engineering culture
in which these strategies are embedded. Finally, it identifies
the characteristics which distinguish the highest-performing
teams.

The Design Studies Award is made jointly by the journal
publishers, Elsevier Science, and the Design Research Society.
It comprises a certificate and a prize of UKP500. The criteria
for the Award, in order of priority, are: contribution to the
development of the field of design research, originality of
research or scholarship, breadth of relevance, and clarity and
style of presentation. Votes for the Award are cast by the
journal Editors and a group of Officers of the DRS.

CALL FOR PAPERS AIEDAM SPECIAL ISSUE ON STYLE
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE FOR ENGINEERING DESIGN, ANALYSIS AND
MANUFACTURING

AIEDAM Special Issue, August 2006, Vol. 20, No. 3

Understanding, Representing and Reasoning about Style Edited by:
Claudia M. Eckert & Ellen Yi-Luen Do

This special issue of AIEDAM will be devoted to papers concerned
with Understanding, Representing and Reasoning about Style.

Design of all disciplines involves the resolution of both form
and function. Many design artifacts exhibit visible qualities
and features that we call 'style'. While we can often recognize
a style easily, it can be difficult to define exactly what
elements of the design contribute to the style. Artifacts often
don't have only a single style, but display the style of an
area, a convention of practice, a manufacturer, a designer and
even a particular customer. We think of style as being
persistent over a series of objects and recognize it through the
similarity of these artifacts. Style is a relationship between
objects, but it influences how objects are understood and used:
i.e., relationships between objects and people.

Cultural and art historians, as well as design theoreticians,
have studied style from their different disciplinary
perspectives. However, we know little that is detailed and
concrete about how style is generated, deployed or appreciated.
This understanding is necessary for incorporating style into
intelligent computer applications. In this special issue we are
seeking to put together contributions that allow us to
understand what style is, how it works, how it can be supported
and how it can be regenerated.

Specifically, we are asking the following questions:

What constitutes a style? What are the mechanisms through which
style is generated, shared and appreciated? What does style in
different disciplines have in common? Are rules and constraints
part of the definition of style? Can the practices used to
analyze and generate style in one design domain be applicable in
a different field? Can we use systematic approaches and
methodologies to describe, understand and generate style? What
kinds of AI techniques are needed to represent and reason about
a style? Can styles be defined in functional terms as well as
structural terms? How is style recognized and how does the
notion of style influence the process and production of design
artifacts? What is the relationship between style and context?
Can a description of style be created automatically from one or
a set of artifacts? Where do the personal influences on style
and style perception come from? How important is style compared
to other attributes of a product as a success factor? What is
the function of style? Is style a meaningful concept beyond the
visual domains? What kind of computational tools have been built
to support engineering design, analysis and manufacturing
concerning style?

Further details about registration of interest, submission, etc,
can be found at the Special Issue information page:

BRITISH JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT - CALL FOR PAPERS
SPECIAL ISSUE ON ORGANIZATIONAL AND CORPORATE IDENTITY

The British Journal of Management (BJM) is pleased to announce a
special issue focused on recent advances and developments with
regard to scholarship in organizational and corporate identity.
This special issue will be guest edited by Professor John Balmer
(Bradford University School of Management), Professor Alex
Haslam (The University of Exeter) and Dr. Joep Cornelissen
(Leeds University Business School).

Over the last two decades the concept of 'identity' has moved
centre stage in management, marketing and organizational
research. Identity studies integrate different levels of
analysis - organizational (the identity of the whole
organization), collective (the social identity of groups within
organizational contexts) and individual (employees' individual
identities within organizational contexts). The salience of the
identity concept is such that it has been seized upon by a range
of scholars from different management traditions (e.g.
marketing, corporate and organizational communication,
organizational psychology and strategic management), has opened
up various new avenues for theoretical development and research
(see, for example, the Academy of Management Review Special
Topic Forum in 2000), and is seen as significant by senior
managers and other key stakeholder groups.

The objective of this special issue is to publish within a
unified volume a collection of high quality papers spanning the
identity domain in management as a whole.. Consequently, papers
submitted for consideration should address traditional as well
as emergent themes relevant to the field which inform our
theoretical understanding and have implications for practice.
Papers can focus either on organizational or corporate identity
but preference will be given to papers that address both
'organizational identity' and 'corporate identity' from an
integrated perspective. In general, the guest editors' goal is
to encourage creative and imaginative contributions that are
theoretically and/or empirically novel and engaging, rather than
to delimit the special issue by privileging particular topics or
perspectives.

Submissions. preferably sent electronically, either in Word for
Windows format or PDF, should be addressed to

22-24 AUGUST 2005: SG05: 5TH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON SMART
GRAPHICS. Frauenwoerth Cloister, near Munich, Germany

Smart Graphics is grounded in a deep understanding of human
abilities, activities, and desires. This understanding arises
through the integration of fields such as art, design, and the
social, cognitive, and perceptual sciences. Insights are
realised in the form of novel methods for producing and
interacting with rich graphical displays often utilising
established techniques from computer graphics, artificial
intelligence, and computer science in general.

Such interfaces present content that: (1) engages the user and
is esthetically satisfying; (2) participates in human cognition
as external or distributed representations; (3) is sensitive to
the real-time demands of the interaction in the context of the
available computational resources; and (4) adapts the form of
the output according to a wider set of constraints such as an
individual's perceptual, attentive, and motor abilities and the
nature of the presentation media and available interaction
devices.

The 5th International Symposium on Smart Graphics will bring
together researchers from computer graphics, vizualisation,
graphics design, cognitive psychology and artificial
intelligence, all working on different aspects of
computer-generated graphics. This year's meeting will be held in
the beautiful Frauenwoerth Cloister near Munich, Germany.

This year SG05 particularly encourages submission in the area of
visual analytics -- the art and science of analytical reasoning
facilitated by interactive visual interfaces. Visual analytic
interfaces are based on cognitive and perceptual principles to
support human information discourse using innovative interactive
techniques and visual representations. These are augmented by
the art of graphical design and interaction design and the use
of Artificial Intelligence in partnership with biological
intelligence. Testing these applications will require new
methodologies that move beyond usability to quantify the impact
of interactive visualization applications on perceptual,
distributed, and embodied cognition.

17-20 NOVEMBER 2005: RINGLING SCHOOL OF ARTS AND DESIGN WILL
HOST THE SEVENTH INTERNATIONAL MEETING OF THE SOCIETY OF ETHICS
ACROSS THE CURRICULUM (SEAC). The theme will be "The Arts and
Social Responsibility." Artists and designers increasingly shape
not only the art of the gallery or museum, but also consumer
products, public and personal spaces, films and TV programs, and
corporate images. This long reach of the arts into everyday and
public life raises a variety of ethical issues pertaining to the
social responsibility of artists and those who teach them.
Government funding, artistic collaboration and appropriation,
sustainable design, freedom of expression, ethnic
representation, and commodification are just a sample of the
topics that arise as we attempt to assess the impact of artists
on society. How can we encourage aspiring artists and designers
to anticipate these issues and respond with a strong sense of
social responsibility? The conference will consist of
presentations by artists, ethicists, and representatives from a
number of other disciplines. Most conference sessions will be
held in Sarasota, Florida at the Holiday Inn: Lido Beach. Paper
proposals are now being accepted. Conference information and
the full call for papers can be downloaded from the SEAC website

MANAGEMENT AND THE ARTS

The contamination between management and the arts has shown
interesting developments in the recent past. While ten years ago
it would have been difficult to find papers or books by
management scholars drawing on arts organisations and vice
versa, increasing interactions between different professional
communities can be found, where management experts deeply
interact with musicians, museologist, performers etc. A similar
process is clearly part of the wider extension of economic
discourse to arts organizations, where the need to economize
within the crisis of welfare is a possible reason for such an
increasing interest. From another perspective, it is linked to
the issue of how will value be created in the future?

Interestingly enough, however, most of the research in the new
area takes a much more sympathetic view towards the arts, both
politically and methodologically.

The track aims at providing discussions between different
theoretical streams and empirical approaches to two major broad
questions:

- First there is the critical approach implying that working on
these organisations could be seen as a way to question many of
the views of mainstream management which are taken-for-granted,
under a variety of approaches that are "happening" in the
research: from a critique of managerialization processes of arts
organisations based on managerial rhetoric, to the understanding
of internal inconsistency of management studies in themselves,
to the study of organisational aesthetics and creativity
processes that these organisation can highlight more than
others.

- Secondly there is a constructive approach whereby the arts are
taken as model for value creation. Many European states have
launched programmes for design geared at making their industries
creative. This can again be seen as attempts to find new
resources based on aesthetics and the interpretation of both
heritage and visions for the future produced by artists. What
have been the effects of these attempts? Have mew economic
resources emerged in consequence of such approaches? Can art and
artists help discover and create sustainable new resources for a
future European Economy?

THE 3rd ENGINEERING AND PRODUCT DESIGN EDUCATION INTERNATIONAL
CONFERENCE will be organised by the School of Design and Media
Arts at Napier University, Edinburgh.

Conference Aims

The conference aims to explore novel approaches in design
education within the wider context of product design and
development. The theme 'CROSSING DESIGN BOUNDARIES' reflects our
wish to incorporate many of the disciplines associated with, and
integral to, modern design pursuits. For example, the
conjunction of anthropology and design, the psychology of design
products, soft computing and wearable products, new media and
design and how they can be best exploited within a product
design arena. Discussions about product design education and the
cross-over into these established fields are warmly welcomed as
are links between other specialist design areas such as
interaction design, jewellery design, furniture design, and
exhibition design which have been under represented at E&PDE
conferences in the past.

21 FEBRUARY 2005: RESEARCHERS AND THE CULTURAL SECTOR. 10
Carlton House Terrace, London.

Exploring the relationship between researchers in HEIs and
museums, galleries and heritage organizations

The Arts and Humanities Research Board (AHRB) offers an annual
series of research strategy seminars on various themes
throughout the academic year. The seminars are designed to raise
and explore issues of strategic importance for the development
of research in the arts and humanities.

The first of this year's seminars will focus on the two-way
relationship between academic research and the museums,
galleries and heritage sectors. It will take place on 21
February 2005 at 10 Carlton House Terrace, London, SW1.

How can researchers in HEIs establish, sustain and promote
relationships with museums, galleries and heritage
organisations? What can these relationships bring to academic
research in the arts and humanities? In what ways do our
museums, galleries and heritage organisations benefit from their
links with academic researchers, and to what extent is academic
research put into practice in the cultural sector? These, and
other issues, will be explored by our four keynote speakers and
through group discussion.

Speakers include:

Professor Dawn Ades, Director of AHRB Research Centre for the
Study of Surrealism and its Legacies, University of Essex
Engaging academic research with the museums and galleries sector

Dr Carolyn Sargentson, Director of Research, Victoria and Albert

UKP60 per head will be made, for which we will invoice you.
Replies by 11 February 2005 would be appreciated.

20-25 JUNE 2005: THE CULTURAL DIMENSION OF BUSINESS RESEARCH
VI. The Sixth Doctoral Seminar on the Cultural Embeddedness of
Marketing, Consumer and Organizational Research

Arranged by University of Southern Denmark - Odense Main Campus

OBJECTIVE OF THE SEMINAR

This doctoral seminar deals with the cultural dimension of
business research. The purpose of the seminar is to draw the
attention of researchers to cultural factors in business
research in order to broaden, deepen and update their
understanding of the phenomena they wish to examine in fields of
business.

The questions asked, the issues addressed and the methods used
in all research projects are embedded in a culture. A critical
self-awareness of this embeddedness not only raises the
scientific level of the research, but also enlightens the
researcher as it provides a new perspective not only in
cross-cultural but in all research.

For example, to renovate advertising, it is necessary to be
aware that contemporary consumers perceive themselves and
advertising in a different way than their parents did.
Postmodern consumers have a tacit understanding of semiotics.
They play different roles, sample different statuses, pursue
different ideals. Analyzing organizations requires an
understanding of the presentation of self, rituals and symbols,
and the cultural dimensions of communication. An appreciation of
cultural differences is mandatory to international marketing but
also to human resource management.

The purpose of this doctoral seminar is 1) to provide PhD
students and other researchers participating in the seminar with
insights about the cultural context of their research project -
a context of which they are not always aware, and have not
always been properly trained to take into consideration - and 2)
to help seminar participants in working on a cross cultural
project to improve their approach.

Some basic concepts and advanced methods of the cultural
approach to business research will be introduced by the faculty
who are working at the interface of cultural analysis and
business. Examples of how those concepts are fruitful to
contemporary business research will be given. Participants will
be helped by the faculty to perceive the cultural dimension of
their own research projects.

Furthermore, many a contemporary research project cannot fully
be captured by a single conventional discipline or method. A
cross-cultural and interdisciplinary theoretical and
methodological perspective is, therefore, at the core of this
seminar.

Among other approaches, emphasis is placed - depending on
faculty participation - on the relevance that theories
encountered in anthropology, cultural analysis,
ethnomethodology, ethnology, epistemology, hermeneutics, history
of ideas, literary criticism, phenomenology, psychology,
semiotics, social psychology, sociology, and systems theory have
for business research.

Keywords are: complexity, content analysis, creativity, culture,
exoticism, globalism, legitimacy, localization, meaning myths,
norms, relativism, rituals, roles, the sacred, status, symbols,
values, and Weltanschauung.

There will be an emphasis on each participant's own research
project, since the main purpose of this course is to enable the
researchers to reconsider their research project from
perspectives different from conventional business research in
order to generate more meaningful questions and alternative
hypotheses, as well as theoretical insights into their own
research, resulting in a more up-to-date, interdisciplinary,
reflexive research.

The seminar will achieve these objectives not only through the
exposure to the cultural context of business research as a
whole, but also through relying on the diversity of cultural
backgrounds and research traditions that the doctoral students
will bring with them. Therefore, the students will be requested
to present their research problems and research perspectives at
the beginning of the seminar.

Active participation during the seminar is a must. Readings
before and after the seminar will be required.

ideas for research raised in group discussion at the first
Network seminar will be circulated in advance. The aim is to
enable workshop participants to explore project priorities with
a view to developing funding proposals over the next 3 years. It
is hoped that either at the workshop, during the evening social
event or thereafter, participants will identify and exploit
opportunities for collaboration.

THROWING AWAY POLICIES SEMINAR - Friday 1st April

The throwaway culture that prevails in modern industrial nations
hasobjective of this workshop is to share experiences, discuss
successful models of teaching activities, and explore issues of
common concern, including the design of Interaction Design
curricula. The workshop intends to stimulate participants to
consider (and discuss) a range of organizational and pedagogical
issues that affect learning practices in the area of Interaction
Design.

We hope to achieve this by making available a range of exemplars
(provided by the participants themselves). We would therefore
ask each participant to write a brief description of your
interaction design course/center/institution utilising the
categories described in the guidelines available on line at:
http://www.idc.ul.ie/convivio/

To support this description we would also ask you to take a few
photographs of relevant artefacts and objects, of the different
learning situations, of some results of your class activities,
and of your institution/center. These descriptions/exemplars
will guide the discussions and explorations during the workshop
and provide some concrete material to which we can refer in our
discussions.

BOOK REVIEWS

Darso, Lotte. 2004. Artful Creation. Learning-Tales of
Arts-in-Business. Copenhagen: Samfundslitteratur.

Lotte Darso's Artful Creation is a significant contribution to
the literature of innovation and creativity. Based on a careful
and revealing series of interviews, Darso explores four
dimensions of arts in business: arts as decoration, arts as
entertainment, arts as instrumental activity, and arts as
strategic framework.

This work deepens some of the issues that Darso (2001) explored
in the doctoral thesis that became her first book. As research
manager of The Creative Alliance at Learning Lab Denmark, Darso
has moved from a study of the innovation process to the rich but
often ambiguous exploration of how businesses create by
integrating arts in management.

Through 53 interviews, Darso examined the ways that arts in
business serve to open a dialogue that engenders creative social
interaction and individual learning. A wide range of artists and
managers narrate tales that enable us to reflect on learning
opportunities that we can recast in a new theoretical framework.

Darso approaches creativity and innovation as a range of applied
processes, drawing on multiple models and approaches for deep
understanding and applicable learning. She draws on such authors
as Chris Argyris, Donald Schon, Peter Senge, Margaret Wheatley
and Claus Otto Scharmer in a new and exciting way.

Artful Creation will interest the readers of Design Research
News for a second reason. It is a valuable contribution to the
methodological literature of design research.

First, Artful Creation enables us to explore familiar cases from
a new angle. Some of the businesses we meet in this book also
appear in the design research literature. These include Volvo,
Bang & Olufsen, Unilever, Nycomed, Novo Nordisk and Xerox PARC.
The opportunity to examine the same companies from another angle
offers designers and researchers in innovation and design
management a useful comparison for what they already know.

Second, Darso offers useful models for exploratory research,
learning, and theory development. Design research often requires
us to engage in exploratory research while working in
ill-defined and ambiguous territory. In many cases, the fact
that projects involve multiple academic disciplines, each with
their own research tradition, while engaging multiple domains of
knowledge and practice makes such projects particularly
challenging. Meeting these challenges successfully requires a
level of methodological sophistication and reflectivity that
some researchers in our new field have not yet developed. Darso
shows how to use careful development, rich dialogue, and
sensitive inquiry with gentle yet rigorous thinking to solve
puzzling problems.

Because these problems are particularly difficult for
researchers who use practice-based research methods for art and
design research, Artful Creation can be a helpful and
illuminating research methods text.

Third, Artful Creation introduces us to some of the concepts of
the artful society that many of us try to bring to the practical
side of our work in the practical business of design. Darso's
four approaches to arts in business compare well with the useful
distinctions between design as styling, design as process, and
design as innovation.

The book encourages application, introducing approaches such as
Scharmer's (2004) presencing theory and Darso's (2004: 161-172)
own practical recommendations for using arts-in-business as a
strategic and transformative approach to innovation and
organizational learning.
