Once upon a time, the State Highway Dept decided to build a bridge across a
very deep gorge. There was a village on each side of the gorge, and anyone
who wanted to go from one village to the other had to drive many miles down
the mountain, across an existing bridge in the valley, and many miles up the
other side.
"How wide should the new bridge be?" the Engineers asked.
They did a traffic survey over several months, and determined that an
average of two cars a day traveled from one of the villages to the other.
So they designed the bridge to be just wide enough for a traffic level of
two cars per day.
