Dear Dr. Vincent,
I thought you might be interested to have a look at the work I did a
while back. The article is available two places:
http://www.thebakken.org/research/Schmitt/Otto.htm. Then, a slightly
revised version has been published in _Physics in Perspective_, vol. 4
(2002), pp. 456-490.
I have had greater access to the personal papers of Otto Schmitt for the
revision on which I am now working because they have recently been
deposited and organized (to some extent) at the Universiyt of Minnesota
Archives. I came across the following lines from a paper Otto Presented
at a "Bionics Meeting" in Dayton, Ohio, on 19 March 1963, which you
might find interesting:
"Let us consider what Bionics has come to mean operationally and what it
or some word like it (I prefer Biomimetics) ought to mean in order to
make good use of the technical skills of scientists specializing, or
rather, I should say, despecializing into this area of research.
"Presumably our common interest is in examining biological phenomenology
in the hope of gaining insight and inspiration for developing physical
or composite bio-physical systems in the image of life."
This is Otto's earliest use of "biomimetics" that I have found (I've
found several passages from earlier presentations in which he outlines
the concept but did not use the word).
Best,
Jon Harkness
