The International Trust for Traditional Medicine, founded in 1995, is a non-profit, registered public charitable Trust dedicated to the study and research of Indo-Tibetan and allied medical systems (www.ittm.org).
The ITTM centre in Kalimpong offers a good starting point for ethnographic fieldwork in the region and a meeting ground for anthropologists, ethnobotanists and other researchers to share experience and literature. The responsibilities are:
- to generally supervise the centre's ongoing activities of five local staff (2 gardeners, 1 housekeeper, 2 data input operators - all well-trained and independent workers)
- to pay their monthly salaries
- to keep accounts of daily expenditure
- to welcome international invited scholars (between 1 to 5 guests a month) to the centre and look after their well-being (introduce them to logistics to be self-sufficient), keep accounts and help with contacts
- to oversee and guide activities at the centre (depending on visiting researchers and their interests)
- if interested, to conduct bi-monthly yoga and/or art classes for the local village children (about 15 kids aged 3-14)
ITTM will provide:
- accommodation and excellent food on very reasonable and discounted rates
- the space, library, computer facilities for your own research
- a mobile phone
- a three-week training in July 2005
- support from the ITTM Trustee residing in Darjeeling
- regular communication and guidance by e-mail and phone
Prerequisites:
- Openness and sincere interest in taking on the responsibilities of this place
- Involvement in personal research (preferably on traditional medicine, ethnobotany, anthropology and allied disciplines)
- Experience living/travelling in India or other Asian countries
You are free to go for occasional journeys around the region (Darjeeling/Sikkim) for a break, or along with guests (plant collection treks, fieldwork, etc.)
Please send your CV and expression of interest and feel free to ask further questions.
