The use and usefulness of pilot studies
2pm GILL LANCASTER (Liverpool University)
Design and analysis of pilot studies: recommendations for good practice
Pilot studies play an important role in medical research,
providing information for the planning and justification of randomised
controlled trials. A framework for pilot studies related to RCTs is
discussed, including methodological reasons why a pilot study might be
conducted. Appropriate analysis of pilot studies is also discussed.
2.25pm AMANDA FARRIN (Leeds University)
How useful are feasibility studies? Experience from the UK BEAM trial
I will briefly describe the design of the UK BEAM feasibility study, a complex
primary care trial evaluating complex interventions for back pain. I will then
discuss in detail, issues that arose, lessons learnt and how the feasibility study
influenced the design and conduct of the main trial.
2.50pm PETER DAVIDSON (University of Southampton)
Pilot studies: experience from the Health Technology Assessment Programme
This presentation will briefly describe the role of the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) programme in health service research. The programme has examples of pilot studies. Their role and value will be discussed and compared to other means of resolving important problems or uncertainties at the start of pragmatic clinical trials.
