2005 Way To Be Awards
Trumpington Pharmacy wins 'The Way To Be Award 2005'
"Mr. Gregory is our life-saver in Trumpington." That's what
customers at J.T. Gregory Chemist think of their local pharmacist.
Mr. Gregory was the winner of the 2005 The Way To Be Award, which was
presented at a crowded event at Cambridge Arts Theatre on November 16th.
In front of around 200 invited guests, Stephanie Cole OBE presented
pharmacy boss Mr. Gregory with the well-deserved Award.
Customers who nominated J.T. Gregory remarked time and again on the
meticulous service provided by the Trumpington pharmacy, including home
deliveries for those unable to collect medicines, and an unfailingly
pleasant and sympathetic approach to customers.
The Way To Be Award, founded in 2004 by a partnership comprising the
City Council, South Cambs District Council and Directions Plus, calls on
the public to nominate the most disabled-friendly businesses. The award
was the idea of Mark Taylor, Cambridge City Council's Access Officer who
wanted to mark the October 2004 parts of the DA with an encouraging
award for service providers to counter negative reactions to the
legislation. The awards do not show compliance with regulations, just
that disabled customers value their nominated concerns.
Cambridge Arts Theatre and Robert Sayle (both 2004 winners of the
Award) have this year joined forces with the original team to ensure
that the Award was given the maximum publicity throughout the region and
to encourage more disabled and elderly people to nominate businesses or
services who have been particularly helpful.
One of this year's supporters, Professor Stephen Hawking, was also
instrumental in encouraging people to send in nominations for their
favourite disabled-friendly business.
Rob Hammond, Chief Executive of Cambridge City Council and one of the
Award judges, said:
"The Way To Be is about more than conforming to access legislation.
It's about celebrating those businesses or services who make special
efforts to improve the quality of disabled people's experiences in a
particular way. This includes really taking time to understand the
particular challenges faced by people who are disabled or elderly or who
have very small children."
Inspirational speakers at the Award ceremony included Jenny Sealey,
Artistic Director of the Graeae Theatre Company, Graeae is a
disabled-led theatre company which profiles the skills of actors,
writers and directors with physical and sensory impairments. Jenny is
herself profoundly deaf.
Dave Murphy, Executive Director of Cambridge Arts Theatre, hosts of the
event, and one of the judges, added:
"We are particularly delighted to have the opportunity to host the
2005 ceremony, and doubly delighted that Stephanie Cole offered to
present the winner with his prize. Stephanie was made an OBE in this
year's Queen's Birthday Honours for services to drama, elderly
people and mental health charities, so this initiative is close to her
heart."
