Dear collegues
Some Danish labourwards have started to do catheterization routinely on
all women not having passed urine spontaneously after 2 hours after
delivery. (2 hours after delivery women will be moved from the labourward
to the postpartum ward). Of course catherization has been used on the
labourward earlier but only on indication.
I think this practice has started because there have been some incidences
of women not being able to pass urine spontaneously, and it has first been
realized to late, so that the consequence for these women has been a
bladder that has been permanent damaged, that might result in a situation
where they will have to do catheterization for the rest of their lives. The
rationale for this new procedure is to overcome such problems, by
introducing a new preventive routine.
I work as a teacher at the Danish School of Midwifery. I have a group of
student working on a medical technology assesment on this issue, they focus
on the technology aspect and the patient perspective.
How do women experience catheterization? I have been looking for studies on
this issue without luck. Have any of you experience with such a routine? or
know of studies looking into this matter? I would be happy to hear about
it.
