thank-you Celine for this useful and encouraging message. I particularly
like the more communal rather than individualistic focus.

dear colleagues,
The definition of humanization adopted five years ago has the potential
to
change birth... and the world.
Much deeper meaning than the consumerist and cosmetic changes in
hospitals.
I love, and I need to read it from time to time.
So I share it with you,

Concerns on humanized care have been growing worldwide. The
International
Conference on the Humanization of Childbirth was held on 2–4 November
2000,
in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil, with close to 2000 participants from more
than
23 countries, UNICEF and WHO. The concept of `humanization' was
formulated
and adopted by the Conference as the `Ceará Declaration', as follows:
`Humanization':
A process of communication and caring between people leading to
self-transformation and an understanding of the fundamental spirit of
life
and a sense of compassion for and unity with:
1. the Universe, the spirit and nature;
2. other people in the family, the community, the country and global
society; and
3. other people in future, as well as past generations.
Humanization is an important means of encouraging and empowering
individuals
and groups to move towards the development of a sustainable society and
the
enjoyment of a fulfilling life.
Humanization can be applied to any aspect of care, including childbirth,
the
terminally ill, the elderly, the disabled, the poor, health and disease,
education, the environment, economics, politics and culture.
As childbirth is the beginning of life and affects the rest of life, and
because the humanization of childbirth is such a clear need, the
application
of this particular aspect of care is an important start.
In view of the above, the Conference proposes that `Humanization' should
be
a key concept for the development of a sustainable society in the 21st
century and urges all governments, United Nations organizations,
international organizations and NGOs to take action to promote
`Humanization'.
