Biographies
Tom Roper
Tom Roper, Chair-Elect of HLG, is currently Information Resources
Development Coordinator at the new Brighton & Sussex Medical School, having
worked in health libraries since 1991 and in libraries since 1978. He was
born in 1955 in London, educated at the Perse School and the University of
Kent and then stumbled into a job in a public library, taking the
postgraduate librarianship course at what was then the Polytechnic of North
London in 1983 and working in North London public libraries till 1990. Then
he changed direction, working for the British Council and Hawker Siddeley
before finding his way, not unnaturally for a doctor's son, into health
librarianship; he worked in London hospital libraries and at the North
Thames Regional Library and Information Unit before going to the Royal
College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1997 as Head of Library & Information
Services.
A former HLG Committee member, Assistant Secretary and the group's first
webmaster in the wild west days of the internet, he is currently a member of
the Editorial Board of Health Information & Libraries Journal and the
Executive of the University Medical School Librarians Group. Previous
professional activities include acting Chair of HELICON, Chairman, Animal
Health Information Specialists (UK & Ireland), Chairman, European Veterinary
Libraries Group, and Chair, Scientific Programme Committee, Third
International Conference of Animal Health Information Specialists.
He amuses himself by running marathons and running a highly unprofessional
blog.
Maureen Dwyer
Maureen Dwyer has been Librarian of the Royal College of Nursing Northern
Ireland since 1994. She is a member of the CILIP in Ireland Committee
representing health, and also serves on the Committee of the Libraries for
Nursing Subgroup of Health Libraries Group as well as the Health Libraries
Group Committee.
Marta Calonge Contreras
Marta obtained her MA in Library and Information Studies from Unversity
College London in September 2002 and she has now worked in medical and
health libraries for nearly four years. She joined the Public Health
Intelligence Team at the Health Development Agency in May 2004, where she
is responsible for the management of an internal library service and for
content development of the HealthPromis database. She is also involved in
the development of the National Public Health Language, a thesaurus
specialising in Public Health and Health Promotion. Previously she worked
at the Hammersmith Hospital Campus Library, which is part of Imperial
College London, as Principal Library Assistant. Marta has recently become a
Chartered Librarian.
Alan Fricker
For the past year, Alan has held the post of Knowledge and Library Services
Manager at Newham University Hospital NHS Trust. Prior to this, he spent
four years in various roles in the Library at Central Middlesex Hospital.
During this period, he was also seconded to the NHS Executive London
Regional Office where he worked on a web based meeting system to support
research commissioning. His experience in the health sector began with a
graduate trainee year at the Department of Health.
James Beaton
Honorary Secretary
Health Libraries Group.
