Ah, I see. I feel this really ought not to be a problem, so that
although the F77 interface is deprecated, I thought it was supposed to
be compatible with the new FC interface. This is slightly alarming.

While these should do no harm, they really shouldn't be necessary --
the point of ./configure is that you let the configure script work out
all this nonsense. Are the CC and CXX settings actually necessary, or
just there to choose the Sun compiler over the GCC one?
Can this be addressed by using the dialect argument to AC_PROG_FC(,77)
(the documentation discourages use of that argument, but this sort of
thing is what it's for).
