I think it depends on the OS to some extent.
The LD_LIBRARY_PATH and /etc/ld.so.config route is for _finding_ the
shared libraries, on Linux. Whether the libraries will work if they've
been moved after installation is a separate question.
Libtool has an -rpath option, which is documented as
> -rpath libdir
> If output-file is a library, it will eventually be installed in
> libdir. If output-file is a program, add libdir to the run-time path
> of the program.
It's largely on the grounds that this option exists, that I guess it
matters crucially on some platforms.
