SUN/251 Getting       Started with the Starlink Java Infrastructure and Applications Set       describes the package and /star/starjava/javadocs/index.html describes       the Starlink STARJAVA classes API. There are miscellaneous documents       in /star/starjava/docs/ for individual package information and third       party application documentation. The STARJAVA package contains the       following applications and classes.                APPLICATIONS/UTILITIES in STARJAVA         FROG V0.7 (rebuild)             Display and analysis of time series data.         SOG V0.3 (update)             Son of GAIA, minor updates.         SPLAT V2.2 (update)             Spectral data analysis tool.                          The following changes have been made in this release.                - A bug in the astrometry reading software has been fixed. This                led to the application of CDELT1 and CD1_1 scales to the                wavelength range of some spectra (produced by IRAF), which meant                that the range was underestimated by a scale CDELT1.                - You can now specify the spectrum type on the command-line using                the --type option. Valid values are: "fits","hds","text","hdx",                "table" and "line ids".                - You can now open a spectrum using a URL, so spectra stored on                remote servers can be downloaded and displayed.                - The handling of 2D and 3D input data has been enhanced.                Previously such data was just "vectorized" (that is laid out                line-by-line and displayed as a single spectrum ), now such data                is collapsed down onto the dispersion axis (if one can be                determined). For 3D data each image plane is collapsed in a                similar fashion. You can also choose to extract each line as a                spectrum.         TABLECOPY V2.0 (update)             Copy tables from one format to another.             See TOPCAT.         TOPCAT V1.3-2 (update)             Tools for OPerations on Catalogues and Tables             TOPCAT changes since v1.1:               Many improvements including: better scalability (-disk flag               allows disk-backed tables), faster and more functional plotting               including interactive selection of a non-rectangular region and               plot exports to GIF/EPS, new Activation Action feature, CSV               format supported, VOTable 1.1 supported, Java 1.5 compatibility,               more and better documented algebraic functions, faster matching.         TREEVIEW V2.2-1 (fix)             Hierarchical data viewer.              Bugfixes.               CLASS LIBRARIES in STARJAVA         ARRAY V0.2 (rebuild)             N-dimensional array manipulation and I/O         ASTGUI V1.1 (update)             AST specific UI components         AXIS V1.0b2 (rebuild)             Third generation Apache SOAP (new)         COCO V1.0 (rebuild)             Java UI for Coco (new)         DIVA V1.0-1 (update)             Interactive graphics classes         FITS V0.1 (rebuild)             STARJAVA-specific FITS access         HDS V0.1 (rebuild)             Non-native HDS utility classes         HDX V0.2 (rebuild)             A flexible, extensible, data model for astronomical images, tables             and other metadata         HELP V1.0 (rebuild)             Help support classes for Java applications         JAIUTIL V1.1 (rebuild)             Utility classes for JAI         JETTY V4.0.4 (rebuild)             HTTP Server and Servlet Container         JNIAST V3.4 (update)             Java Native interface to AST         JNIHDS V0.3 (rebuild)             Java Native Interface to HDS         JNIKAPPA V0.1 (new)             JNI wrapper for Starlink classic KAPPA         JPCS V0.1 (rebuild)             Java Parameter and Control System         JSKY V2.0 (rebuild)             Java Components for Astronomy         JUNIT V3.7 (rebuild)             Third party unit testing framework (junit.*)         MIRAGE V0.1 (rebuild)             Support classes for Bell Labs Mirage application         NDTOOLS V0.1 (rebuild)             Tasks for NDX and NDArray manipulation         NDX V0.2 (update)             N-dimensional astronomical object manipulation and I/O         PAL V1.0 (rebuild)             Positional Astronomy Library         RV V1.0 (rebuild)             Java UI for RV         SOAPSERVER V0.3 (update)             Embeddable SOAP server for applications         STARTASK V0.1 (new)             Run Starlink classic routines from Java         TASK V0.1 (rebuild)             Experimental parameter system         TABLE V2.0 (update)             Generic table manipulation and I/O         TAMFITS V0.96a (rebuild)             Third party basic FITS access (nom.tam.*)         UTIL V1.0 (rebuild)             Miscellaneous utility classes         VOTABLE V2.0 (rebuild)             VOTable I/O       The STARJAVA package can be considered to be independent of the standard       USSC, and is distributed separately with its own Java GUI installer. All       the STARJAVA applications and classes are distributed under the GPL       licence.       Updated STARJAVA Documentation       The SPLAT documentation (SUN/243.4) SPLAT - A Spectral Analysis Tool has       been updated and can be found in       /star/starjava/docs/splat/sun243.htx/sun243.html. It also appears in the       DOCS package and can be seen with the command, showme sun243.       SUN/251.3 - Getting Started with STARJAVA       JAVA/2 STARJAVA classes API              SUN/253.2 - TOPCAT - Tool for OPerations on Catalogues And Tables   GAIA v2.8-0       This is a major release of GAIA (2.8.0) which can now display image       planes from data cubes. Using this you can step through along an axis       and display the image formed by the other two axes. You can also       combine a range of image planes or do the stepping using a timed       animation. The displayed images created by this tool can be analysed       just like any other image, but note the data format should be NDF for       good efficiency.                                                                                Other changes in this release:                                                                                 - GAIA has been relinked against AST to fix a problem when the          presence of multiple possible astrometries in FITS headers          causes the image scale to be incorrectly estimated.                                                                                 - Printing the "whole image" now works when repeated without exiting          GAIA.                                                                                 - Incompatibilities in the WCS components of NDFs are now ignored (older          versions of AST cannot read newer encodings).                                                                                 - A problem with coordinate readout coupling when using more than one          interactive slice or XY profile is being used.                                                                                 - A error reading the CRPIX values in the blink/compare toolbox has been          fixed. 3 New infrastructure   ------------------   None. 3 Infrastructure updates   ----------------------  There has been a number of infrastructure updates since the previous release. 3 Base set updates   ----------------   None. 3 Withdrawn Packages   ------------------   None. 3 New, updated or withdrawn documents   -----------------------------------  This section lists documents not directly related to particular packages that  have been updated or withdrawn. This section also contains details of  documents related to software not available on the CD-ROMs that have been  updated or withdrawn.      AST v3.4-5                                                                                AST provides a comprehensive range of facilities for attaching       world coordinate systems (such as RA/Dec, frequency, etc) to       astronomical data, for retrieving and interpreting that information       and for generating graphical output based on it.                                                                                The library should be of interest to anyone writing astronomical       software which needs to manipulate coordinate system data, especially       celestial coordinate systems. AST is portable and       environment-independent.                                                                               Main Changes in this Version      ----------------------------       o The Format attribute for simple Frames and SkyFrames has been         extended. It has always been possible, in both classes, to specify a         precision by including a dot in the Format value followed by an         integer (e.g. "dms.1" for a SkyFrame, or "%.10g" for a simple Frame).         The precision can now also be specified using an asterisk in place of         the integer (e.g. "dms.*" or "%.*g"). This causes the precision to be         derived on the basis of the Digits attribute value.                                                                                o The Plot class has been changed so that the default value used for the         Digits attribute is chosen to be the smallest value which results in no         pair of adjacent labels being identical. For instance, if an annotated         grid is being drawn describing a SkyFrame, and the Format(1) value is         set to "hms.*g" (the "g" causes field delimiters to be drawn as         superscripts), and the Digits(1) value is unset, then the seconds field         will have a number of decimal places which results in no pair of labels         being identical.                                                                                o Addition of a new FITS encoding, "FITS-CLASS", which uses the         conventions of the CLASS package (see         http://www.iram.fr/IRAMFR/GILDAS/doc/html/class-html/class.html).                                                                                o Addition of a new class classed DSBSpecFrame. This is a         sub-class of SpecFrame which can be used to describe spectral axes         associated with dual sideband spectral data.                                                                                o The FitsChan class will now read headers which use the old "-GLS"         projection code, converting them to the corresponding modern "-SFL"         code, provided that the celestial axes are not rotated. 3 New documents   -------------     * None 3 Updated documents   -----------------     * SUN/210.17 AST - World Coordinate System library (Fortran)     * SUN/211.17 AST - World Coordinate Systems library (C version) 3 Withdrawn documents   -------------------     * None   See the news items for each package for details of what is new and updated.
