I had no problem with building the system on the UBC opteron system but
things may have broken since I did that.
The main outstanding opteron problem is that we need to make special
x86_64 versions of all the platform dependent files even if they are the
same code as x86 (so, eg, FIO error codes don't currently work on x86_64).
