Psychoanalyst Leonard Shengold's "Soul Murder: The Effects of Childhood Abuse and Deprivation" (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1989; ISBN 0-300-04522-0) has a good chapter on "An Attempt at Soul Murder: Kipling's Early Life and Work" that is of interest in this context.
Shengold also has a second book, "Soul Murder Revisited: Thoughts About Therapy, Hate, Love, and Memory" (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1999; ISBN 0-300-07594-4), which also contains several mentions of Kipling.
