UNIVERSITY OF DUBLIN
TRINITY COLLEGE
MPHIL IN ETHNIC AND RACIAL STUDIES
DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY
'This course is highly theoretical and provides sophisticated forms of
instruction in the most up to date innovations within the field. In my
view this is the best course of its kind on offer in Europe' (Prof Les
Back, Goldsmith College, London).
We are currently recruiting students for the Masters programme in Ethnic
and Racial Studies at the Department of Soicology, Trinity College, for the
academic year 2005-6.
This full-time 12 months programme, the only one of its kind in Ireland, is
well situated in Ireland, where ethnic tensions have underpinned the
Northern ireland conflict, and which, due to economic prosperity since the
mid 1990s, has recently become a favoured in-migration destination, having
been a sending country for centuries. While neither in-migration nor
racism are new in Ireland, social changes have brought about new discourses
in this area of 'race' and ethnicity, opening the space for new
theorisation and policy possibilities.
In our eight years, we have taught an internationally and ethnically
diverse student cohort, and many of our graduates are working in social
policy and research positions in statutory, non-governmental and
educational organisations in this field in Ireland and abroad.
The programme has four main components: two core courses (theory and
research methodology), seven one-term courses (Human rights, Migration,
Social policy, Culture colonialism and Irishness, Language and ethnicity,
Intercultural communication, and Gender and ethnicity), a 15-20,000 words
dissertation, and a series of seminars, workshops and conferences.
We are looking for applilcants with a good first degree preferably
including a social sciences component. In exceptional cases, work
experience and publications will also be considered.
