Institute on Globalization and the Human Condition
The Faculty of Social Sciences at McMaster University invites
applications for a tenure-track position at the assistant professor level
whose focus will be Global Social Policy. The field of global social
policy examines the degree of globalization of social policy, the social
content of global politics and the impact of globalization on nation-state
social policies. It includes topics such as: the impact of supranational
organizations on the making of national social policy; policy developments
favouring global social redistribution of resources; global social health
policy-making; transnational labour regulation; global social provision
and empowerment; the role of international civil society (transnational
social movements and international NGOs) in social policy areas; and the
role of the business world in shaping the global discourse on social
policy and development.
The candidate should be capable of effective teaching and supervision at
the graduate level in the a Social Science Department such as, but not
limited to, Political Science, Social Work or Sociology, and be able to
provide a course on global social policy for the interdisciplinary MA in
Globalization Studies offered by the Institute on Globalization and the
Human Condition (IGHC). The candidate must also be able to contribute
effectively to the undergraduate programme in their disciplinary home
Department.
The candidate should have a PhD or be near completion and show promise of
excellence in teaching and research. The Faculty expects the person who
takes up the position to engage in an independent research programme
yielding significant peer-reviewed publications. McMaster has an
innovative and extensive Globalization research program housed in the
Institute on Globalization and the Human Condition
(http://globalization.mcmaster.ca/) and is the future home of the journal
Global Social Policy (http://www.gaspp.org/journal/). The successful
candidate’s programme of research should be complementary to international
research initiatives such as the Globalism and Social Policy Programme
(http://www.gaspp.org/index.asp)
