WID's New Executive Director: Mark Breimhorst
The Board of Directors of the World Institute on Disability (WID) is pleased
to announce that Mark Breimhorst is WID’s new executive director. Mark has
most recently served as the North American Regional Director for
Underwriters Laboratories (UL), where he managed new business initiatives
within UL. Before that, he founded and served as executive director of
Rinconada Ventures, which supports social entrepreneurs with financial and
management assistance. Mr. Breimhorst is an alumnus of the Stanford Graduate
School of Business, where he received his MBA with a focus on marketing and
entrepreneurship. He has built counseling, leadership, educational outreach,
community-building and legal advocacy experience through his work as a
disability rights advocate and paralegal at Disability Rights Education and
Defense Fund and Suncoast Center for Independent Living.
Stanley Yarnell, MD, Chair of the Board, stated, “Mark's life long
commitment to the disability movement is supported by an impressive record
in business management and fundraising. I am confident that his strategic
vision and entrepreneurial spirit will build effectively on the legacy of
Deborah Kaplan and the impressive achievements of the WID staff.”
Mark Breimhorst commented, “I’m excited and honored to join WID’s talented
team. WID plays a vital role in the disability rights movement and I look
forward to working with internal and external stakeholders to grow WID to
the next level. ”
Deborah Kaplan, WID’s outgoing executive director, will leave WID in January
2005 to strike out on her own with a consulting business. Deborah has been
at WID since 1989, with a year and a half spent elsewhere during the late
90’s. Her accomplishments include the creation of an annual cultural event
for the Bay Area disabled community, “Ever Widening Circle,” which features
an evening of performers with disabilities. She also oversaw the development
of several new initiatives at WID, many focused on changing public policy,
leadership development and the initiation of highly successful websites.
WID is a nonprofit research and public policy center promoting the civil
rights and full societal inclusion of people with disabilities. WID’s work
focuses on four areas: employment and asset development; accessible health
care and personal assistance services; inclusive technology design; and
international disability and development. Over half of the Board of
Directors and staff are people with disabilities. By bringing together
people at all levels people with disabilities, government representatives
and companies - WID is changing the way things run at the policy level, to
make sure people with disabilities have the same opportunities as everyone
else.
