THIS IS A NEW POSITION.
Landmine Monitor (www.icbl.org/lm) is a unique civil-society based
initiative of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL), 1997
Nobel Peace Prize recipient.
Landmine Monitor collects information and assesses progresses and problems
in the international community's response to the global landmine crisis,
especially with regard to the implementation of the 1997 Convention on the
Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of
Antipersonnel Mines and on their Destruction.
The main goal of the Disability Research Officer, working as part of a
team, is to produce high quality reports on all aspects relating to mine
casualties and survivors in the Landmine Monitor Report including landmine
casualties, survivor assistance, disability policy and practice, and
funding. This would be achieved through coordination of a small in-country
research network, supervision of a few researchers/writers, field research
on specific countries, writing of reports, and editing as required in
preparation for handover to the editor-in-chief for inclusion
in the full Landmine Monitor Report. In addition, the Disability Research
Officer shall work closely with HI to help publicize and disseminate
research conducted within the organization.
The Disability Research Officer's duties will include, but will not be
limited to:
* assisting the Thematic Coordinator/Editor (TCE) to develop
questionnaires and
contributing to research guidelines
* supporting LM researchers in all aspects of their work related to
victim
assistance, in particular providing comments on draft reports written up by
researchers/writers
* developing and maintaining close links with in-country campaigners and
providing training to conduct victim assistance research by practical
example when
appropriate
* conducting in-country research for key countries as determined by
the TCE in
consultation with the Editorial Board
* working together with Handicap Internationals (HI)'s programs
department in
order to get the most accurate data and attending meetings of the programs
committee
on a regular basis
* establishing contacts with other organizations in the field in
order to get
the most accurate data
* compiling information from field research, in-country campaigners
and other
sources and writing victim assistance sections of country reports as
directed by the
TCE
* assisting the TCE with the pre-editing process by crosschecking
information
from different countries and supplying additional information when needed
* reporting regularly to TCE
* organizing events or activities to enhance knowledge of victim
assistance or
other mine-related issues
* representing HI when needed and attending meetings of the Policy Unit
* carrying out other tasks as necessary to support the work of the
Policy Unit.
QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must be creative, self-motivated, well
organized, and
able to function under pressure and handle numerous tasks simultaneously. The
candidate must be willing to take initiative, work with minimum
supervision, and
work independently as well as function as a member of a team. The
candidate must be
willing to travel frequently.
Other desired attributes include:
* University degree or equivalent
* Very good knowledge of oral and written English and, if possible,
French (or
other language such as Arabic, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish)
* Research and editing skills
* Professional experience in disability issues is a clear asset
* Knowledge of mine issues and field experience are assets
* Diplomacy and flexibility
* Capacity to work in a highly intercultural environment
* Ability to speak in large gatherings is an asset.
