Hi Petra,
I think the example of "Dr Linda" 's product endorsements is an
embarrassment to the field of psychology, but then again, much of what the
field of psychology has done throughout its short history has been an
embarrasment and an affront to humanity, so no change there! Interesting how
she talks of a body image revolution, but has allowed her own image to be
airbrushed and sexualised in such a way that it completely disentangles any
good she seeks to do.
Anyhow, perhaps this would be a good point to return to our limited
discussion of having a not-for-profit, open access community psychology
journal. I think that it might be timely to re-introduce this idea following
your posting Petra as this might provide us with an antidote to the
commercialisation of our work as psychologists. Through publishing our work
in our academic journals (as some of us are being encouraged to do by our
employers) we are helping to make rich publishers and their shareholders
even richer.
The for profit journal 'serials reviews' has produced a special issue on
open access publishing. It has made the special issue open access for a year
(would have been a bit hypocritical of them not to!). It might make
interesting reading for us and might give us some stimulus to think about
having our own UK journal or even think about whether we want to open these
ideas up to our European network and have an European Com Psy Open Access
journal.

don't, have a scive.
