Dear All
Views on name change.
While I was brought up to use 'Mire' as another name for peatland (much of my Peatland ecology was taught to me by Brian Huntley and Fred Slater, so its probably their fault!), I think that there is much to be said for the terminology of Bryan Wheeler and Mike Proctor (J Ecol 88, 187-203). Currently I tell my students that this wider definition of 'mire' is probably best.
As many of you will know Wheeler and Proctor suggest 'Mire' for any telemic wetland (with 'peatland' use for Mire in its more restrictive sense). So Mire = telemic wetland; as such its not really a change as far as subject goes but may appear to be of wider interest to some potential members.
As such the 'Telemic Wetland group' would be ideal BUT for the fact that its a bit of a mouth full (even more off putting that mire to the interested outsider?). So I would have no problem with the (less exact) Wetland Ecology group.
best wishes
Dave Wilkinson

Subject: Name change?
Dear All,
There have been discussions within the Mires Research Group about a possible name change to the group to broaden its appeal. We have already taken the decision to change the session name at the BES Annual meeting from Mire Ecology to Wetland Ecology. When we have discussed a possible new name for the group in the past 'Wetland Ecology' group has come
up as a suggestion. Please could you all give me your views on a possible name change. Could you comments specifically on the suggestion of 'Wetlands' group and 'Wetland Ecology' group as well as propose alternatives.
Best wishes and seasonal greetings,
Deborah
