HUMAN-CENTRED TECHNOLOGY: ADVANCING THE POTENTIAL FOR COMMUNICATION,
LEARNING AND INTERACTION
8TH HUMAN-CENTRED TECHNOLOGY POSTGRADUATE WORKSHOP

University of Sussex, Department of Informatics
June 28th – 29th
http://www.informatics.sussex.ac.uk/research/hct/hctw2005/

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
Happily, it is time again for another Human-Centred Technology
Postgraduate Workshop. This workshop aims to bring together research
students with a common interest in Human-Centred Technology. The
diverse and interdisciplinary nature of this area can restrict the
opportunities available to students for peer review, feedback, and
discussion of their work or the process of completing a postgraduate
qualification. This workshop will give postgraduate students a chance
to discuss their research and also hear presentations from leading
academics at the forefront of Human-Centred Technology Research.

The Human-Centred Technology Postgraduate Workshop has taken place for
a number of years now and this time we would like to step back and have
a critical look at whether (and how) the human-centred approach has
increased the potential for communicating, learning, and interacting
with digital technology. We want to know how your research fits into
this theme. You may, for example, be interested in whether computers
can make some kind of knowledge more accessible, be looking at whether
technology is helping to foster communication, or be investigating how
users might come to understand a new way of interacting with
technology.

The workshop will comprise three sessions, each of which will address a
key question as described below. Like the overall workshop theme these
questions are defined broadly and are intended to provide a common
thread within presentations and a focus for discussion. In each of
these sessions there will be a series of short presentations from
students and a panel-led group discussion of the ideas presented.

This time the workshop will take place in collaboration with the
Psychology of Programming Interest Group 2005 Workshop, which will be
held after the postgraduate workshop. Details of this event can be
found at http://www.informatics.sussex.ac.uk/events/ppig2005/call.html

SESSIONS
Interaction between user and system.
Session 1 - How can computerised technology advance the potential for
learning?
Session 2 - How can user-centred software development advance the
potential for communicating and learning with digital technology?
Session 3 – How can a user-centred approach help in the design of novel
forms of interaction, such as in ubiquitous computing environments or
with tangible interfaces?

SUBMISSIONS
There are two submission categories for this year’s workshop:

1. A short paper (of no more than four pages) addressing one of the
themes of the workshop.
2. A summary of your interests and a description of how your planned
research will address one of the themes of the workshop (of between two
and three pages). This submission category is intended to provide a
forum for students in the early stages of their research.

Submissions should be sent to [log in to unmask] in word or rtf
format by Monday 28th February 2005. Formatting instructions will be
provided at http://www.informatics.sussex.ac.uk/research/hct/hctw2005/
