CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
IEEE VR 2005 Workshop on New Directions in 3D User Interfaces
Workshop date: Saturday, March 12 (full day)
Submission deadline: January 31, 2005
Location: Bonn, Germany (as part of IEEE Virtual Reality 2005)
WORKSHOP WEB SITE:
http://www-human.ist.osaka-u.ac.jp/3dui_workshop/
AIMS AND SCOPE OF THE WORKSHOP
This workshop focuses on novel research in three-dimensional user
interfaces (3D UIs). The workshop builds on and expands the scope of
last year's workshop "Beyond Wand and Glove Based Interaction." The
theme of the workshop will again be on moving beyond the “common” and
“traditional” (if one can use those words with respect to such a young
research area) approaches to 3D UIs. Just as wands, 3D mice, and gloves
became traditional input devices for 3D UIs, a handful of well-known
interaction techniques and UI metaphors also became de facto standards
(often because they were the default interaction techniques in
widely-used software toolkits). In this workshop, we want to spotlight
research that investigates novel methods of 3D interaction for
immersive virtual environments (VEs), augmented and mixed reality
(AR/MR), and desktop 3D systems. We invite you to submit research
papers and position papers for this event (see “Submissions” below).
WORKSHOP FORMAT
The workshop will begin with a presentation on the current state of the
art in 3D UIs and promising future directions. The main part of the
workshop will consist of short research presentations, grouped into
several thematic areas. Following each group, we will engage in a
guided discussion of that area. We also hope to include a few longer
presentations that survey a particular sub-area of 3D UIs, take a
position on a controversial topic in the field, or propose a research
agenda. The day will conclude with a panel discussion and time for
informal networking and demos.
TOPICS OF INTEREST
Workshop paper topics include but are not limited to:
• 3D input devices
• 3D display devices
• 3D interaction techniques
• 3D user interface metaphors
• collaborative 3D interaction
• evaluation methods for 3D UIs
• application of existing devices/techniques in novel contexts (e.g. to
AR, UbiComp, etc.)
• migration of existing techniques to new display platforms
PARTICIPANTS
This workshop is ideal for:
• Developers of new input or display devices for 3D UIs
• Designers of 3D interaction techniques and user interfaces
• Developers of 3D applications requiring complex interaction
• Users of VEs, AR, or desktop 3D systems seeking alternative
interaction methods
SUBMISSIONS
There are two categories of submissions: research papers and position
papers. All submissions will be reviewed by the organizers. Accepted
submissions will be published in the official workshop proceedings
(book with ISBN), which will be distributed to all paying workshop
attendees.
Research papers: To be considered for a 10-minute research presentation
during the workshop, prepare a paper of no more than four (4) pages in
the IEEE conference proceedings format. Papers should describe novel
research related to 3D UIs (see a partial list of topics above). Please
include pictures and/or video with your submission if possible.
Position papers: To be considered for a 15-20 minute position
presentation, prepare an abstract of no more than two (2) pages in the
IEEE conference proceedings format. Position presentations can have a
variety of topics. One might present a sub-area of 3D UIs, describe why
the area is important, and survey the most important new research in
the sub-area. Another might propose a research agenda for some aspect
of 3D UIs. Yet another might make an argument on a controversial topic
in the field, such as the standardization of 3D UIs. These
presentations should be designed to raise questions and inspire
discussion among the attendees. Abstracts should indicate the topic of
the presentation and also the qualifications of the presenter.
Submission instructions: All papers should be submitted through the
workshop's official web site at
http://www-human.ist.osaka-u.ac.jp/3dui_workshop/ in PDF format by
January 31, 2005. Please contact the workshop organizers if you have
any questions.
IMPORTANT DATES
• Submissions due: January 31, 2005
• Review decisions expected: February 7, 2005
• Print Ready document due for accepted submissions: February 15, 2005
(due to the time required to print the proceedings)
DISCUSSANTS
If you are interested in serving as a "discussant" (leading the
discussion of a group of related research papers), please contact the
organizers.
