"The Dec. 5 story entitled, “Ledyard Hospital Questioned As Right Medicine
for Troubled Teens,” implies that Universal Health Services is the only
health care company interested in providing more inpatient psychiatric
services to Southeastern Connecticut adolescents and its interest is driven
by financial reasons only. This is a poor representation of what I know to
be the facts….
Not one of these young people came to Stonington without an extensive
attempt by multiple outpatient service providers to treat him in the
community. ... Their previous placements either did not integrate the
treatment of their substance use and/or mental health issues or they did
not treat one or both problems at all. Most times they were treated in
locked facilities, not a residential, therapeutic community like
Stonington. …Stonington is not locked. We have made a strong commitment to
provide young people a safe, consistent community. I would invite anyone
who questions this to come and visit. …"
