Pace Neil, 'Drott' was a term commonly used in England to refer to a
tracked (NOT rubber wheeled) excavator with a bucket/shovel at the
front. Drotts - at least on excavations which I worked on - were often
used for clearing areas - 'stripping'. A 360 degree excavator (a 'Hymac'
- or is that another outmoded term?) seems to be more generally used for
that kind of work nowadays.
I certainly haven't heard the term 'drott' for a long time, and it was
nice to be reminded of it by Richard - but there's no need to be ageist
about it, Neil!

Dear Pete,
A Drott is a rubber wheeled excavator, crane, log-loader or tipper
truck. Drott as a company hasn't existed for about 25 years, and it
shows the age of the archaeologist who uses the term.
Cheers,
Neil

Richard, I have worked out what Lol means, but what about 'drot' from
your
first posting? Is this some kind of Cumbrian dragline? (oh-err missus)

Well I am so glad my little missive encouraged so much debate because
of
my sloppy use of terminology. As it happens I completely agree that
archaeology is the activity and not the 'product'. Yes I should have
said archaeological remains, mea culpa (probably got this wrong as I
failed latin CSE). Point is though I was trying to send a helpful
response to a researcher and I think she and I understood each other.
I
would not have been so unforgivably imprecise in an article or
publication but in a chatty email you were lucky I did not use text
speak. Lol Richard.
