A new study has just been published by Carers UK, "Young Carers in the UK:
The 2004 Report", written
by Chris Dearden and Saul Becker. This is the report of the third UK survey
of 'young carers' (children who are unpaid care-givers) who are being
supported by specialist young carers projects across the UK. Based on data
for more than 6,000 young carers, the report provides a statistical profile
of what these young carers do in terms of their caring roles and
responsibilities, and of the care needs of the people for whom they provide
care. It shows, for example, that the average age of young carers in contact
with projects is 12; 56% are living in lone parent families; nearly one in
five provide intimate care; one in ten is caring for more than one person; a
quarter are having problems in school, and so on.
