JOB VACANCY
The National Audit Office is currently looking to recruit to the team which
undertakes value for money studies on the Department for Work and Pensions.
The attached advertisement appeared recently in The Guardian. The closing
date is 30 November 2004:
Senior Analyst
(£38-£42k + benefits) Central London
No one sees things like we do. Because we at the National Audit Office,
through Parliament, are the people that help hold government to account.
We don’t just audit the accounts of government departments, we seek to
ensure that the taxpayer is getting Value for Money and that real
performance improvements are effected in the way that public services are
delivered and taxes collected. And you don’t have to be a qualified
accountant to make a difference.
We require a Senior Analyst to contribute to our vfm studies examining the
performance of the Department for Work and Pensions. We have recently
completed studies on tackling pensioner poverty, the quality of benefit
decision-making, and tackling barriers to the employment of older workers.
We are currently looking at a range of subjects as diverse as attendance
management in the Department, the Social Fund and the complexity of the
benefit system.
You will have a strong academic background and probably hold a Masters
degree in a relevant subject (eg. social sciences, politics, economics,
etc.). More importantly you will have a proven track record of leading
projects and at least 3 years practical research-based work experience.
Knowledge of social security is important and a wider understanding of
central government would be an advantage.
As a key member of the team your role will include identifying potential
areas for future study, gathering and analysing data for examinations and
preparing draft reports. You will deal with correspondence from MPs and
members of the public and provide briefing for senior staff. In addition,
we are looking for someone to take a lead role in developing our links with
specialists in academia and the voluntary sector.
You will have, strong verbal communication skills, the ability to write
clear and succinct reports and be able to work effectively with other
people. You will have experience of working in an environment which
demands high professional standards and good interpersonal skills. In
return we can offer you a competitive salary and excellent benefits.
Appointments are initially offered on a two year fixed term basis.
If you are interested further details can be obtained from our website at
www.nao.org.uk. If you wish to apply please send your CV and covering
letter to Jill O’Neill, Recruitment Manager, National Audit Office, Room
B145, Buckingham Palace Road, London SWIW 9SP (email:
