Postgraduates in Latin American Studies (PILAS) Conference
Feb 4-5, 2005
The PILAS Conference serves as a forum to explore Latin America from the
perspectives and priorities of a broad range of scholarly disciplines.
Affirming our commitment to the value of a multidisciplinary approach, we
expect to unravel and understand the complexities and contradictions that
have characterised the unique experience of Latin American politics,
culture and society since its origins. Similarly, we are committed to
fostering the interest in Latin American issues in the context of British
and European universities.
Take the opportunity to discuss your research interests in Latin America by
presenting a paper on the subject you are currently exploring. You can also
come around to simply share your experiences and questions related to
research and fieldwork trips among a group of colleague postgraduate
researchers. Don’t miss the chance to be part of this growing network of
young Latin Americanists!

Call For Papers We welcome papers to be presented at the annual PILAS
Conference, which will take place at the Centre of Latin American Studies,
Cambridge University, February 4th-5th, 2005. The conference provides an
opportunity for postgraduates working on Latin American issues (sociology,
anthropoligy, political science, arts, economics, among other subjects) to
meet and share their work. Organized to include as many participants as
possible, this conference is an ideal way to meet other postgraduates in a
relaxed and friendly atmosphere. It is also a great place to share new or
developing ideas and test presentation skills on an audience of your peers.
In order to give as many people as possible the chance to share their work,
papers should take no more than twenty minutes to present.
The conference will have a reception (gathering on Feb 4, 2005), followed
by dinner.
If you are interested in presenting a paper please send a brief abstract
(no more than 250 words) to: [log in to unmask]
Deadlines
The deadline for applications is WEDNESDAY 15th DECEMBER.
Applications after that date will be considered if places are still
unfilled, but please contact the organisation committee before completing a
registration form, to check the availability of presentation slots. If you
would only like to attend please feel free to let me know as soon as you
can.
Accommodation is offered on a first-come, first-served basis, and we will
endeavour to provide (subsidised) rooms for all our speakers. Some people
may be allocated at students rooms but we need to know of your interest to
be able to coordinate it. However, in the case of exceptionally high
numbers of responses, or applications after the deadline, we may have to
make alternative suggestions. The average cost of accomodation at Cambridge
is 25 pounds per night (and this might be in a college, B&B).
We ask that you include a brief abstract with your registration form; these
will be collected, and added to a conference hand-book.
Costs There is no registration fee but attendants will need to pay for
their accomadation and dinner.
