"A peninsula against itself: Competing Visions of Italy"
Graduate Student Conference
Columbia University in the City of New York
April 1-2, 2005
CALL FOR PAPERS
From the earliest humanists in competition with their Classical
precursors, to the letterati of an Italy politically divided yet
unified in an ideal Republic of Letters, from Manzoni and la questione
della lingua, to a diverse contemporary Italian literature marginalized
with respect to its European peers: "Italy" has long been the site of
cultural discord with respect to its national and literary identity.
This two-day conference seeks to explore the clashes both literal and
figurative that have variously animated and undermined artistic
production in and about Italy.
The organizers welcome submissions representative of a variety of
critical literary, historical, art-historical, cinematic, sociological,
political-scientific, and other perspectives. Interdisciplinary
approaches are encouraged. Paper proposals might address:
- Where are the islands in this portrait? The marginalization of Sicily
& Sardinia
- Encounters between regions: molte Italie
- Literary centers and peripheries: Tuscany and everywhere else?
- Dialects vs. Standard Italian
- The gaze of the Grand Tour
- Cosmopolitan vs. provincial
- Tra noi? Minority groups
- Immigrant and emigrant literatures
- Religious and secular Catholics
- The gender divide
- Rewriting history and the struggle for memory
Presentations will be limited to a reading time of 20 minutes (with
additional time for discussion). Papers may be read (and abstracts
submitted) in English or Italian. Abstracts will be accepted from
graduate and undergraduate students only, should be no more than 300
words and should not display the author's name. They must include an
attached cover letter indicating title, author's name, affiliation,
address, telephone number and e-mail address. Authors can submit
abstracts via e-mail as an attachment in Word (.doc), Rich Text (.rtf)
or Adobe PDF (.pdf) format, or via regular mail.
