Good morning,
I have been contracted under the auspices of The Stem Cell Network (part of the Centres for Excellence Program in Canada) to write some papers on disability and the ethics of stem cell research. At the outset of the work, I sent a request for references and suggestions to Gregor's bioethics and disability list (as well as some other bioethics lists), but got minimal response. Perhaps there are people on this list who work in the area of stem cell research and disability, but who aren't on that listserv.
I seek accounts of stem cell research which are informed by analyses of systemic forms of oppression such as gender, race, and class; critical work from philosophy of biology would also be welcomed. Please send suggestions of articles, books, related blogs, webpages/sites, and so on to: [log in to unmask]
WARNING: As part of the preliminary research on this project, I recently read Wesley J. Smith's, Consumer's Guide to a Brave New World (Encounter Books, 2004). Smith's work on euthanasia has been widely embraced by some disability theorists and activists, though others distance themselves from it because of his associations with institutions that promote creationist and "intelligent design" arguments. Enthusiasts of Smith's earlier work please note: Consumer's Guide to a Brave New World repeatedly advances homophobic and heterosexist arguments with respect to "repro-genetic" technologies and access to them.
Best regards,
Shelley Tremain
