Thanks to all of you who supported the summertime "Amazonathon" promotion of
"Movie Stars and Sensuous Scars: Essays on the Journey from Disability Shame
to Disability Pride." We made it up to the 160s in the Amazon rankings. At
this time of year, many of us think about gifts, so I'd like to suggest
thinking about "Movie Stars..." Below are comments from a review-in-progress and
after that paragraph are a list of websites where "Movie Stars" can be purchased.
And once more, thanks for all of your support. Steve
"One of the delights of "Movie Stars..." is the thoughtful manner in
which the author examines the evolution of his disability rights consciousness…
. It is a process that many (most?) of us have experienced, but few of us have
described as well as Steve has. His brief essay describing his wheelchair as
his friend, for example, conveys a shift in thinking that many of us who are
wheelchair users have experienced….He begins to see many other aspects of the
world around him in a different light as well: Telethons are not simply a way
to raise money to help disabled people; they are events that set us apart and
usually emphasize our inequality and inferiority. The essay entitled "The
Walkout', in which Steve describes the event that, more than any other, led to
his transformation to a disability rights activist, is my favorite. In the
essay, we learn how he came to see that, no matter how hard he tried, he could not
control his own destiny as long as he and his compatriots were not treated as
equal citizens and could not define their work agenda in terms of disability
rights. It is a lesson that many people with disabilities learn every day.
Perhaps it is a process that all of us must experience in our own lives before
we truly 'get it'.
Phil Calkins, longtime disability rights activist
