Hello everyone
During the lunch break in the participatory geographies session at the IGU
in Glasgow a potentially crazy idea emanated of trying to establish a
participatory geographies/participation working group within the RGS/IBG.
This was discussed mainly in the context of providing some form of impetus
for reviewing the roles/aims etc of things like ethic committees (so they
might actually be beneficial rather than a general hindrance to
participatory approaches for example), but its aims/focus could obviously be
much more broad/diverse/unfocused. It seems the 'group' would need to make
a vague justification for its existence, identify some aims, gather together
20 Fellows, and develop a draft constitution. The next research committee
meeting is on 24 January, and the papers would need to reach Lorraine Craig
by about 10 January. If all goes well, and it gets accepted, the group
would be eligible for some funds, the RGS would help with mailings out to
'members', and they would also be able to give us time at the next ibg.
So...this email is a kind of initial scoping one - please get in touch with
any of us (Rachel, Mike or I) if you'd like to take some role in at least
sorting the forms out / commenting on the nonsense any one of us drafts in a
rhizome like collaborative effort, if anyone else should be invited at this
stage, who else should be involved beyond this (in a really participatory
way...), anything else to consider...
vaguevaguevague!
Cheers for now, and apologies if you receive this more than once...
