Have you run ldconfig after installing freeglut?
From Brian's email to the list in June:
"Downloaded and installed freeglut 2.2.0 (glut is dropped in RHEL and
Fedora due to licencing issues) http://freeglut.sourceforge.net/ in
default location (/usr/local/). Added /usr/local/lib to /etc/ld.so.conf
and ranldconfig so that the freeglut libraries would be picked up by
default."
