Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture In lower
Brittany (Celtic part) Templars and St-John knights were known under
the common name of "Menec'h Ru", "Red monks".
Why ? Was this because the Knights Templar and the Knights
Hospitaler were military monks who might shed blood ?
Respondeo: More likely because of something they wore. Other orders
were known by the colour of their habits: Black monks, White Monks,
Black Friars, Grey Friars, White Friars. Did they exhibit a red cross?
Bill.
