Research Conference Announcement
International Conference
Dates: 23-25 June 2005
Queen's University Belfast
Arts-based Approaches to Educational Research
Call for papers and attendance
This two-day conference will bring together a range of interested
professionals, practitioners and researchers who increasingly use the
arts to enhance, transform and capture people's meanings and who
are interested in advancing the arts in educational and social research.
Deadline for abstracts: 7 January 2005
With emerging methods of qualitative research in the ascendancy and
challenging the dominant discourse of 'scientism', we find allies and
theoretical frameworks that are more sympathetic to art; more sympathetic to
the nuances of therapy. Arts-based research itself, and transformational
methods such as visual sociology, narrative inquiry, autobiography,
ethnographic studies and authoethnography find greater resonance with our
'ways of knowing' and are increasingly finding a place in educational
research.
This conference will provide a stage for a range of local and international
researchers whose use of arts-based research methodologies aims to
illuminate experiences and perceptions of lives as they are made difficult
by aspects of social and psychological difference - by gender, sexuality,
ethnicity, illness, disability and sectarian division amongst other issues.
We hope to attract contributions from teachers, students, artists,
counsellors, youth workers, psychologists and other education-related
practitioners as well as researchers and teacher educators. Alongside formal
papers and discussions, we invite short artistic presentations and/or
performances.
Keynote speakers include: Andrew Sparkes.
