Hi Claire
sounds like an interesting project.
for some important DS context, you may want to look at chptrs 4-5-6 in Simi Linton's "Claiming Disability" and/or various articles by Devva Kasnitz & Russell Shuttleworth (for ex, in Semiotics & disability studies book, or check out the World Institute on Disability site for 'engaging anthropology in disability studies' article) .... both these sources talk extensively about the kinds or research that will be most helpful as the field expands and one of their shared comments is that we need more emphasis on what people with a range of capacities and support needs think/feel, and not so much on what 'non-disabled' people think/feel about impairment. Not to dissuade you from your path, just to add some stimulating context.
look forward to hearing more on your work-
best of luck,
