Apologies for cross postings
Critical geographers are strongly encouraged to apply for the 3 human
geography posts below, from those seeking first lectureship up to
readership. We are a bit low on non-white non-men and others from non
traditional backgrounds - though definitely very welcoming - so please
think about applying. We have relatively low teaching loads and good
research support. I'm happy to talk to anyone about the Social Geography
post or can direct you to the best person for the other jobs.
thanks

centres for research excellence in geography (graded 6*).
The department encourages applications from cognate disciplines and
interdisciplinary approaches as well as applicants working on the Global
South. All successful candidates will be expected to be committed to
producing internationally excellent research and first class teaching.
Preference may be given to candidates with expertise in the following
areas:
• Quaternary Science especially land-ocean inter-relations. (ref

quality, or material properties, mass movement, landslides or glacial
sediments. (ref 0508)

War world; security, surveillance and war; resource and border conflicts;
and the ‘popular geopolitics’ of consumption and representation. (ref 0465)

personal and community safety, risk and resilience, or other specialisms
relating to social justice and an ethics of care. (ref 0467)

FURTHER DETAILS:
(Lectureship/Readership) - Political Geography: The successful applicant
will contribute primarily to the Political State-Space research cluster.
We especially welcome applications from growing/established international
scholars working in the following fields: the geopolitics, political
geographies and re-ordering of the post-Cold War world, including border
issues and resource conflicts; new territorialisations of security,
surveillance and war, including developments surrounding the ‘war on
terror’; ‘popular geopolitics’, including media geographies, the visual
culture of geopolitical conflicts, and cultures of consumption. An
interest in the Global South as well as the Global North, and an interest
in theoretical issues, would be welcomed.
(Lectureship/Readership) - Social Geography: The successful applicant will
be a scholar with a growing/established international reputation who will
contribute primarily to the Social Well-Being and Spatial Justice research
cluster, though s/he is encouraged to work across clusters where
appropriate. We are especially keen on scholars who may have research
interests in one or more of the following: health and welfare, personal
and community safety, risk and resilience, other specialisms relating to
social justice and an ethics of care. In addition, the applicant may
complement the cluster’s commitment to and academic interest in political
relevance and different forms of policy and action research, and/or have
an active interest in developing qualitative or quantitative
methodologies. Applications are welcomed from those working on issues
relating to the Global South or the Global North.
(Lectureship) - New approaches in economic geography: The successful
candidate will contribute primarily to the Lived and Material Culture
Research cluster. We seek applications especially from less experienced
scholars, who are developing new approaches to economic geography.
Approaches to the materiality of economic practice, the performative
aspects of the economy and the virtualisation of economic relations would
be welcome. These might include ethnographic work on the functioning of
markets, organisations and other economic practices; research on the
economy of the screen and mediation of economic relations; or the study of
the embedding of economic activities within cultural and social milieux.
