Final Call For Papers
A one-day interdisciplinary conference on 'Dialogue with Tradition: Contemporary
Writers and Literary Heritage' will be held at the University of Warwick on
Saturday February 5th 2005.
By the 1970s, debate about the inter-relationships between texts and about the
uses of literary canons had begun to influence writers, causing many to
re-consider their attitude towards texts from the past. Dialogue with past
literature became problematized as writers began to re-appropriate texts for
their own purposes, in new and interesting ways. This conference aims to bring
together researchers from different disciplines to discuss the changing use of
the canon (both textual and film) from 1970 onwards.
Papers have so far been received from French, Italian, German, Hispanic and
English Studies.
The keynote speaker will be Professor Martin McLaughlin (University of Oxford).
Participants are particularly invited to address issues related to:
• Dialogue with the canon through literature and film after 1970
• The impact of structuralism and post-structuralism on the use of the canon
• Political re-appropriation of literature
• Re-appropriation of the canon by marginalized groups
• The use of national and international literary heritage in fiction
Abstracts (300 words) and a short biography should be sent to Liz Wren-Owens by
