Dear Aoife,
I suggest that you take a look at these two books--I think you'll find
them helpful. Both books show people from different classes in various
parts of Ireland.
1) Sean Sexton. Ireland in Old Photographs, with an Introduction by JJ
Lee. Little Brown Co., A Bullfinch Press Book, 1994.
2). Myrtle Hill and Vivienne Pollock. Image and Experience:
Photographs of Irishwomen c. 1880-1920. Belfast: the Blackstaff Press,
1993.
All the best,
Margaret

Hello all,
I have just started work on urban class cultures in Ireland,
from 1890 to just after independence. I am interested in
using photographs as source material, rather than simply
illustrations.
I have never attempted this before, so I was wondering
whether anyone has any experience of this? Are there any
inspirational books I should read? In an Irish context, I
haven't come across a methodology that interrogates photos
as source material, so any suggestions from any specialism
would be appreciated.
Thanks!
