Hi There,
You could also try involving large organisations to include a working
population. Often big workplaces are very interested in the health of
their staff so you could offere them some kind of report for any
participation.
Environments like government offices, large distribution centres,
department stores etc maybe good places to write to. You could even ask
them to involves branches in other regions to widen the sample.
I agree with olas that the internet is a fantastic way to obtain
participants too and if you use a snowball technique asking those you
email to forward the messge on you can obtain quite a large sample.
Good Luck.

involves rating various health behaviours along a number of evaluative
dimensions. I need a minimum of 600 completed questionnaire, and they have
to be completed by members of the general public ( I would preferably
have a range of social classes).

into getting a recruitment company to provide me with a list of addresses:
if they used the postal address file (PAF) for example it would cost about
£800 to provide me with a couple of thousand addresses (taking into
account lower responses rates), but these letters would have to be
addressed to 'the occupier', which would mean that the response rate could
potentially be very low, and much more money would be spent on consumables
etc..
