Hello Rhona
Amanda Thornton recently organised a one-day conference with a community
psychology theme in Lancaster. Amanda talked about her own interest in
crime, in relation to the older adult context in which she works. I think
she has managed to win grants to support some of her work/research in this
area, so I guess she might be a good person to contact. I've pasted her
details below. I'm not sure if she is a member of this list.

Dear existing members,
I have just joined the discussion group, and should introduce myself. I am
a clinical psychologist working in a primary care setting in Central
Manchester. I have a long-standing interest in community psychology and
preventive approaches in mental health, and a particular area of interest is
ethnicity and the cultural relevance of psychology services to a diverse
population. Sadly, I seem to have (or protect) little time to put into
practice ideas and concepts of community psychology, and would like to join
the group in order to perhaps glean inspiration and energy from the work of
others in the network. A conversation with a colleague in Public Health
services today pushed me into action to join, and the following is an open
enquiry to members.
Is anyone aware of work on the psychological impact of crime (ie not
specifically being a direct victim of crime or violence, but more living in
communities where crime is prevalent and every-day, and there is an
expectation that "I might be the next")? If anyone is aware of studies
looking defining such impacts, or describing community interventions in
relation to this issue, I would be very interested, as would my colleague in
public health, who is seeking arguments for funding and collaborative work
with relevant agencies on this issue.
Many thanks,
Rhona Brown
