I managed to bring up networking on a front-end machine using a stock
RH7.3 installation with the addition of the 2.4.20-30.7.legacy kernel
RPM from Fedora Legacy.
John's point about eth0 and eth1 being reversed is right on the money.
Under this arrangement, what are labelled as Lan1 and Lan2 on the case
are seen as eth1 and eth0 respectively by the OS.
This explains my earlier observation about being able to see the
interface in ifconfig but being unable to transmit on it. It was
simply that the cable wasn't in the right socket.
