I've tried to bring up one of my new GridPP front-end machines under
RedHat 7.3, but I'm having a hard time with the network controller.
Installing 7.3 from CD, the way I would do to set up an LCFGng server,
I wasn't able to activate its network controller. The version of the
e1000 driver included in 7.3 appears incompatible with the hardware.
On a 7.3 machine, lspci reports that the device is an "Intel Corp.
Unknown Device".
I reinstalled the same machine with Scientific Linux 3, and the
ethernet came straight up, acquired an IP via DHCP and worked seemingly
perfectly. Under SL3, lspci reports: "03:01.0 Ethernet controller:
Intel Corp. 82541EI Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Copper)".
I saw similar things when I was in Durham last week, attempting to set
up their front-ends.
Therefore, some questions:
0. Has anyone else had similar results, or am I doing something
fundamentally wrong?
1. Am I naive to expect this to work out of the box?
2. Did the tender document say anything about 7.3 compatibility?
4. What's the next step?
Thanks,
Fraser
