I've started committing the advertised changes to automake/starconf (they
were slightly fiddly, and this week has been a mass of distractions,
so it's taken longer than I expected). These are the ones to allow
us not to have configure.ac files in subdirectories (see a thread of
Saturday or Monday, I think).
However, I've just remembered that I've _also_ got to change a lot of
configure.ac and Makefile.am files in the checkout (mechanical, but
probably not terribly automatable), so I shouldn't have committed the
automake.in changes until I'd finished that. So don't update -- or at
least don't install -- new automake until I've finished doing that.
