medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (27. September) is the feast day of:
Elzear (d. 1323) Elzear was a Provencal noble. His uncle was abbot
of St. Victor's, Marseilles, and Elzear was educated there, but at
age 16 he was married off to Delphine and went on to inherit the
family estate. Both served at the court of King Robert of Naples,
and both were regarded as an ideal married couple---pious, etc. E.
was canonized in 1369.
Delphine (d. 1360) Never formally canonized, but apparently every
bit as highly regarded as Elzear.
A modern saint: Vincent de Paul (d. 1660) Vincent was born to a
French peasant family. Apparently a wealthy peasant family, since he
got a good education and became a priest in 1600. He became chaplain
to Queen Marguerite, a useful springboard for his work with the poor
and preaching. Eventually, V. founded the Congregation of the
Mission (Vincentians) to evangelize the peasantry and also co-founded
the Sisters of Charity with Louise de Marillac. He founded
seminaries, established hospitals and orphanages, wrote spiritual
works, opposed Jansenism, and in general seems to have fit about
three lifetimes worth of work into his eighty years. V. was
canonized in 1737 and declared patron of all charitable groups in
1885.
